Busan to Get World's Tallest Lighthouse

Yongdusan Park in Busan will become home to the world's tallest lighthouse. Busan Regional Maritime Affairs and Port Office on Wednesday said a huge lighthouse lamp worth W150 million (US$1=W1,181) will be put on the observation platform on the top floor of the 119 m Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park.

It is 13 m taller than the Marine Tower Lighthouse (106m), the world's current tallest lighthouse in Yokohama, Japan.

The lamp will be installed on the octagon-shaped observation platform facing the South Pier of Busan Port.

Seen from a ship, the lamp will show three lights -- red, white and green -- from right to left. White, the center light, indicates the normal sea route. Veering to the right or left will show the red and green light.

The Port Office said, "The Busan Tower lighthouse will be of great help to safe navigation of ships coming into South Pier, whose route width has been narrowed from 450m to 250m as a result of the construction of Namhang (South Pier) Bridge."

The cone of light illuminating the sky will also be an attraction.
